Film opening analysis - The shining

February 10th, 2010 by simonemarshall2414

The shining has a very light hearted opening which shows no danger or sense of struggle appart from the sound, the sound is diagetic. The music used through-out the opening is the build up to all of the wierd things that the charactors witness in the hotel and how things arent as relaxed as the shots make them out to be. The music makes the audience expect something bad to happen for awhile. A little into the opening the charactors and the situation begin to be introduced as the camera follows the car with an aerial shot from a helicopter.

The whole of the opening sequence is made up of cut up establishing shots, without the non-diagetic music the shot seem perfectly calm with no drama or tension. Because of the music the tension is established along with the genre of movie that the audience is watching and that the opening sequence is just a build up to all of the drama and action that will begin further on in the movie.

there are no cut over’s while the credits roll. as the establishing shots are happening the credits simply roll over so the audience can still see the shots of the car driving to the location that the movie will take place at. in this case the hotel that the family will now live at as the father has a new job.

Introduction to sound

Microphones are a piece of vital equipment that is found in alsorts of pieces of electrical equiment from phones to computers and even recording studios. Without realising people use microphones on a daily basis. Throughout filiming close attention is to be taken to the sound and what type of microphone is used as any disruptive and unappropriate sound thats picked up can change the mood and emotion of the scene compaired to how the director origionally wanted it to be. To avoid this, there are different microphones that have different functions e.g. a voice microphone can be used for voice and to pick up dialogue as it is so sensitive i can pick up whispering very clearly and easily.

Camera shots

October 7th, 2009 by simonemarshall2414

While filming a scene a number of shots will be used to set the emotion, mood or make a clear understanding of the situation to the audience. At the beginging of any program, movie etc. a shrot called the establishing shot will beused. This shot establishes to the audience where this shot is about to take place, sometime the camera will then pan over the area so that ethe audience as an idea of what the whole setting of the scene is like, This shot is also refered to as an Extreme wide shot (EWS). In a Very wide shot (VWS) this shows barely shows what the subject with e.g. a person or object but mainly shows the place of the scene for example a house, this is used after an establishing shot, the establishing shot shows the area of the scene but the very wide shot shows the exact plave fo the scene. After this is usually the wide shot, this shows exactly what the shot is about, if the shot is about a person then it will be the whole persons body so the audience can get a idea of where abouts they are as it catches a little of the charactors location and also the audiece gets an idea of what the charctor is doing and the mood. A close up shot (CU) can be used for a chartactors face to show their main emotion and feeling to establish to the audience what the charactors reaction maybe to certain news etc. Commonly in a shot a cut away is used, this can be of an object, animal etc. this shot is when the camera is moved away from the main person, object or action. Or the oposite to the may be a cut in, this a close up shot to part of the main action in the shot weather it is a main charactors hands, feet or part of the body. A point-of-view shot (POV) this shot gives the audience a insight the the world of the charctor and what they are seeing, example, if the charctor is reading book, then the shot will be of the book they are reading and their hands turning the page, this makes the audience look at the worl through the charactors eyes. Another shot used during filming is usually a weather shot, this shot shows the weather of the location in the scene, this shot usually only lasts for roughly about 3-5seconds as after mjore than that it will lose the attention of the audience and the situation.

Using a video camera

September 28th, 2009 by simonemarshall2414

While using a video camera for filming, a tripod is commonly used. A tripod is a hold for the camera so that the final piece of film is not shakey and is steady so therefore the audience can cleary see what is happening in the filmed shots. While using the tripod and video camera, it is wise to tuck the lens cap out of the way so that the sound of the lens cap hitting against the tripod is not picked up and recorded. Most current video cameras have LCD screens on the side to be used while filming or to rewatched the filmed piece of work but it is better to use the eyepiece as it is more accurate and therefore no filming mistakes are likely to be made.

Storyboards

September 27th, 2009 by simonemarshall2414

Through the storyboard many things are decided from the narrative and atmosphere of a shot to the possible decision of who could play the role of certain charactors of the shot.  At the beginning of the Storyboard, the first shot is commonly ‘the establishing shot’ this shot establishes the setting of the current scene or where that scene is going to take place. This commonly takes place in the sitcom Friends.

Storyboard Planning

September 27th, 2009 by simonemarshall2414

Before creating a storyboard there are a number of things that need to be considered such as, what the screen play will be based on, what the location will be and camera angles that maybe used etc. Through the planning for the storyboard, narrative may also be used to make a rough mock up or the proper storyboard.

WordPress is used for making blogs about many things. It can be used for making blogs about a persons day to day life or even for work reasons such as careers or school. Once a Title has been made for the blog and the user has finished typing the blog and it has been published, the blog is then posted online and readable to those who are connected and in contact with the user of the blog.
