Sound (task 7)

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

When creating a piece of film, it is important to remember to alter anything that could effect the outcome. Aswell as considering shots, framing, action etc. Another vital part of filming is altering the sound. Bad sound can be something that can completely ruin a film.

Sound is captured through microphones. Most cameras have internal microphones, however, there are also more variations of external microphones that are used for different situations in filming. Microphones work by converting sound waves into an audio signal. The major part of a microphone is the diaphragm, this is a thin piece of material inside the mic’s head. It works by vibrating when sound waves hit it, it then makes other components vibrate which are diesgned to convert these vibrations into audio signals; which is what are used in the film.

When using a microphone, it is important to adjust the sound levels which can be done on the camera itself. This is basically a way of adjusting the left and right sound levels so they are equal and suitable for the film. If the levels are too low the sound will be too quiet in the film, too loud and the sound will be overpowering and even distorted. It is also important when using handheld external mic’s that they are held at a good distance from the object of sound.

Shots/Framing (task 5)

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

When planning a shot, the main way to create a desired effect is to frame the action properly. The main way to do this is by selecting the correct type of camera shots. There are many diferent shot variations, from an extreme wide shot to an extreme close up.  Other types of specialist shots are two shots, over the shoulder and point of view shots.
All of the above and more are used throughout the world of film. Using them correctly is essential to creating a succesful piece of media.

Setting up the camera (task 4)

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Although automatic settings on modern cameras create outstanding results. However there is often times where certain settings on the camera have to be adjusted manually. These include:

-Zoom: This is used to frame a shot effectively from diferent ranges. zoom is used for cu and ecu shots.

-Focus: Although most cameras have an auto focus feature, there is often occasions where focus is needed to be switched from one object to another. this needs to be done manually because the camera doesnt know what you want to focus on in certain situations

-White balance: This is a function within a camera which helps it to adapt to the shot in view. It is a process which shows the camera what each colour should look like. This can be awkward in some situations as the camera automatically changes the colours from shot to shot. This is altered manually by focusing the camera on a matt white object in the same lighting as the object you want to capture. the camera automatically registers this as pure white, therefore alowing you to obtain seemless colour matches from frame to frame.

Planning a shoot (task 3)

throughout the process of producing a film, planning plays a role as vital as the actual filming. When setting out on creating a film from initial ideas, it is important to consider some major points in order to save wasting time, money and oppourtunities. The main points are:

-The purpose of the film; how is it going to do what it is inteded to

-The location; is it relevant

-The events within the film; how do they relate to the intended purpose of the film

When properly planned, these points are what create profesional pieces of film that carry out a distinct purpose
